MONAGHAN, MICHAEL

MONAGHAN, MICHAEL

Retired New York City firefighter, Michael Monahan, 83, received his last call Monday, May 19th with his wife Claudia by his side. Born January 10, 1942 in New York City, he was the son of the late Charles and Josephine (Phelan) Monahan. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he became a NYC police officer working as a motorcycle cop patrolling the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn for three years before fulfilling his dream job as a NYC firefighter. He proudly and courageously protected the citizens of NYC for 30 years prior to his retirement. Michael's service to his community didn't stop after his retirement. He was always willing to give and help those in need especially children. He was active in the Kiwanis of Cape May and the Lions Club of Avalon where he was a Director. He and his wife Claudia gave their heart to many children — whether it was teaching the CARA kids how to skip rocks on the lake; spending time with them and taking the kids to Convention Hall for roller skating, or being the conductor from Polar Express, waiving a lantern, and shouting “All Aboard” for the Kawanis Christmas Party Bus. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother John Monahan and many dear firefighter friends. Michael will be deeply missed by the love of his life his wife Claudia (nee Jacobs) whom he married October 10, 1987. He is also survived by a brother Charles Monahan and sister JoAnn Posnanski wife of Harry; nieces, nephews; and great nieces and great nephews. Funeral Services will be held 11AM Wednesday, May 28 at Evoy Funeral Home, PO Box 1010, 3218 Bayshore Road, North Cape May, NJ. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 10AM until the time of service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation at 21 Asch Loop, Bronx, New York 10975.
